Border Issues in the Light of Actor Network Theory [Only available in French]

Summary of research note
This research note proposes to approach the subjects of migration, borders and the relationship between the two through a specific lens: the Actor Network Theory (ANT) approach. This approach allows us to examine the materiality of migration issues, and therefore to focus more specifically on the technological evolution of borders, as well as the impact this may have on migrant bodies. This work presents borders as infrastructures, and attempts to understand the material reality of mobility in three key ways. First, we address the question of information systems resulting from the technological development of borders. We then turn our attention to migratory movements, focusing on the materiality of migrants’ journeys through the importance of certain objects, including passports, but also on the ways in which individuals enter and experience border systems. We conclude with the logistics of migrant deportation, which takes place within the infrastructures of mobility and illustrates one of the finalities experienced by people born of migratory movements.
